2026 US-China Friendship Summer Program
In July 2026, EmpowerED Alternatives is taking learning global! 15 Youth Ambassadors from the Hartford/Greater Hartford area will have the opportunity to participate in a 6-week summer program, the 2026 US-China Friendship Summer Program. For two weeks, the Youth Ambassadors will learn about Chinese language, culture and history. Then, they will travel to Beijing, China, where they will participate in New Oriental Education and Technology Group's US-China Friendship Camp. After they return back to the US, they will share their experiences in a presentation to the public.
The criteria to apply are that you are:

In grades 7-10 in Hartford/Greater Hartford area

In good academic and behavioral standing
-
Preference given to Hartford residents or students in Hartford schools

At this time, you must be eligible to obtain or currently hold a US passport

Available to attend the 6-week camp from July 6th-August 14th

Engage in 2 or more fundraising activities

Willing to travel to China and meet new friends

Willing to share your experiences in a presentation when you return
If you meet the criteria, fill out the 2026 US-China Friendship Summer Camp Application.
To apply, you must fill out the application, write 2 essays, obtain 2 school staff recommendations, and have your parents' sign off that they support your interest in the program. All qualified applicants will be interviewed by our interview committee.
Meet the 2026 Winter
Youth Ambassadors

Peyton
Peyton is an 11th grader in Hartford. Through this experience, she hopes to strengthen her communication skills and develop leadership abilities that will benefit her in school, her community, and beyond. She stated, “Understanding global relationships is important to me, and I know this program will give me insights that shape how I see the world and my future goals.”

Aditi
Aditi is a 9th grader in the Greater Hartford area. She hopes that going to China will help her learn about Chinese architecture. Aditi noted, “This experience will probably stay with me for a long time, helping me grow, learn and connect myself as a world citizen.”

Michael
Michael is an 8th grader in Hartford. He stated, “I’ve never been exposed to culture outside of what I know here in CT. My goal is to learn and experience food, culture, and life outside of the United States.” He hopes this trip allows him to express different ideas in his writing and incorporate Chinese culture into his imagination through his art.

Stella
Stella is an 8th grader in Hartford. Stella believes this experience is more than a trip; it's a chance to grow and have unforgettable adventures. She shared, “I’ll return as a more independent and confident person, having embraced challenges and met amazing new people.”
